IRT staff have been busy meeting up with alumni and educators at conferences and events. Highlights from the team’s travels are below.

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting

The AERA Annual Meeting was held in Philadelphia this past April bringing together education researchers and scholars. The meeting’s theme was Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action. IRT Executive Director LaShawnda Brooks and Arts & Sciences Specialist Brittany Zorn, IRT ’13 attended and had the chance to connect with many IRT alumni during the week. The IRT hosted an alumni social gathering while in Philly at the PHS Pop Up Garden South Street.


2024 Gabriel Gallardo Research, Student Leadership & Advocacy Symposium

IRT Education Specialist Leislie Godo-Solo, IRT ’91 represented IRT at the 2024 Gabriel E. Gallardo Research, Student Leadership & Advocacy Symposium Graduate School Fair in Seattle, WA in April and spoke with McNair scholars from the Northwest region. 


Pedagogy Workshop, Andover, MA

Leislie Godo-Solo, IRT ’91 participated in a pedagogy workshop with Dr. Django Paris at Phillips Academy, Andover which addressed ways to utilize culturally sustaining pedagogies in classroom instruction.  At El Taller in Lawrence MA, Dr. Paris gave a presentation to Phillips Academy students and Lawrence K-12 educators. Dr. Paris is a Professor of Multicultural Education and the director of the Banks Center for Educational Justice in the College of Education at the University of Washington.

Hope Rising Spring Gala: An Evening with Esperanza Academy

Leislie Godo-Solo, IRT ’91 attended the May gala in Boston, which celebrated the achievements of the school and its students. Esperanza Academy is a tuition-free, independent middle school for girls in Lawrence, MA and a community partner with the IRT. The partnership was initiated many years ago when IRT alum, Viviana Cordero Garcia, IRT ’15 who is now the chief alumni success officer joined the team at Esperanza. The mission of the school, focus on social justice and its high support approach aligns with the work of the IRT to think critically about social justice and build community to make relationships and spaces more socially just.
