Executive Director Letter, October 2024

This fall, IRT is grateful for our community. Over the summer, our IRT scholars connected with our faculty, alums, and consortium partners during the Summer Workshop. Faculty courses focused on theory, understanding the university and higher education. Our scholars had the opportunity to network with our Deans and learn about our partnerships through our virtual Recruiters Weekend. We hope to continue to expand and grow our programming to make it accessible for as many scholars as possible.

As we shift seasons, our scholars are in depth advising support and our program seeks to demystify higher education. Recently, Jackie Spencer, Assistant Director of Admissions at Harvard Graduate School of Education, hosted an information session with IRT alums just for prospective GSE Scholars. We are grateful for our partners and their support of our scholars. Please continue to spread the word about IRT as that is proven to be our most effective tool for reaching more students and programs.

For our alums, please continue to share information on our IRT Alumni Network. It is how we can engage with you but more importantly – how you can share stories, connect for mentorship, or share events with each other. We are in a critical time as a society and the IRT community keeps us engaged, challenged, and hopeful.

This National Hispanic Heritage Month/Latinx Heritage Month, I am gratified with the work IRT alums consistently do. In the last few years, the IRT aimed to increase recruitment from our Minority Serving Institutions to reach more prospective scholars. From our K-12 educators who work directly in schools, supporting students, to our professors adding and expanding the canon — our village works to improve the everyday experience and to develop what we imagine and understand. Our community works daily to contribute to emerging research and scholarship in this demographic. So tell us, how has your work impacted the Hispanic/Latinx community, and how can the IRT continue to grow our support?

PS. Learn more about my Jimmy Fund Walk experience.

Best,

LaShawnda Brooks
Executive Director
